Cold Milling Machine in the Spor ting Center of the Eternal City

One part of the renovation of the Olympic Stadium in Rome involves the renewal and resurfacing of the athletics track with the aid of a Wirtgen W 200 Fi.

The automatic programs of the milling machine make the work easier and increase efficiency.

The resurfacing of the athletics track follows on from the modernization of the stadium for the European Football Championship 2020, and is a part of the preparations for next year’s European Athletics Championships. The first step in the process was the removal of the synthetic track surface. The upper asphalt layer below was then milled off with a W200 Fi cold milling machine from Wirtgen and given the appropriate cross-slope for the new surface layer. The operator was aided in this by digital assistance systems such as MILL ASSIST. “The automatic programs make our colleagues’ work easier, improve efficiency, and therefore also helps to reduce environmental impact. It’s exactly what we need for our projects.”, reports the Project Manager from lead contractor Schiavi S.r.l. A new layer of asphalt was placed on top of the remaining base layer. This was followed by an elastic layer, and then the later visible wear layer, consisting of EPDM (ethylene propylene diene monomer rubber) and PUR (polyurethane).

Tight Schedule, Powerful Machine

The removal of the asphalt layer had to be completed within the space of two working days and making no compromises with regard to the quality of the milled surface. This is why a high-performance large milling machine, the W 200 Fi, was chosen rather than a smaller machine. With ideal logistics, a 2-meter class cold milling machine can mill off more than 8,000 m² of surface layer material for removal in a single day. There was very little room on the site for the trucks needed for removing the large amounts of milled material. However, the “compact” model among the large milling machines is not only powerful, but also extremely agile, which meant that maneuvering it into the right position was no problem at all. And when the milling work was finished within just a single day, everyone involved was more than satisfied.
