The U.S. government commissioned the extension of the apron facilities at Keflavik Air Base, Iceland. The use of the Wirtgen slipform paver SP 62i enabled cost-effective and efficient concrete paving of the 75,000 square meters of operational areas at the air base. The slipform paver laid down 900 cubic meters of concrete per day at a width of 7.62 meters. The ideal formula for the concrete mix was determined with the assistance of Wirtgen application engineers and optimized for paving with the slipform paver. The surface evenness of the paved operational areas on the air base was, of course, a critical factor, and, on completion of the project, was well within the tolerances required.
