A Strong Alliance for Formula 1 Racing

The Circuit de Spa-Francorchamps was rehabilitated with machines from the Wirtgen Group. This not only increases the appeal of the circuit for spectators, but also the safety of the racing drivers.

The legendary, steeply banked Raidillon corner, with its 20 percent gradient, is one of the biggest challenges of the paving project. Three Vögele pavers ensured maximum evenness.

The uphill and downhill gradients of the racing circuit made the rehabilitation of the Belgian Formula 1 racing venue in Spa-Francorchamps an enormously demanding project. Belgian contractor Bodarwé, contracted to carry out the asphalt paving of several sections of the racing circuit in the summer of 2022, has set great store by Wirtgen Group machines for many years. The surface layer was removed by a W220i cold milling machine from Wirtgen equipped with the LEVEL PRO ACTIVE milling depth regulator and 3D controller. This was followed by three Vögele SUPER 1800-3i pavers which seamlessly paved the new surface layer in three strips with widths from 4.1 to 4.3 meters using the hot on hot method.

Maximum Evenness

The mix for surfacing the sections was produced in a TBA 4000 mixing plant from Benninghoven. The Vögele pavers were equipped with the Big MultiPlex Ski sensor system to guarantee maximum evenness of the paved surface. WITOS Paving Docu and the RoadScan temperature measuring system were used for digital monitoring and documentation of the paving process. The valuable support and advice of the experts from the Wirtgen Group also played an important role in the successful completion of the project. Spectators and racing drivers were able to experience the perfect result at the Formula 1 Grand Prix in August 2022.
