D&Ri looks ahead to two major shows for our sector – Demolition Phoenix in the USA and Recycling Ak tiv in Germany.
At the start of February, the US National Demolition Association (NDA) released its National Policy Agenda for 2023 – pledging to work alongside the country’s political leadership on policies for the long-term benefit of the industr y but calling for ongoing support for its members.
The NDA represents around 500 US, Canadian and international companies in demolition contracting, recycling and related businesses, and working with Congress and the White House is a key part of its day-to-day activity.
Announcing the agenda – which the association said offers “comprehensive advocacy” for the demolition industr y – NDA president Scott Homrich said: “The National Demolition Association is excited to partner with Congress and the White House on a policy agenda for 2023 that will strengthen the demolition industr y and stimulate job growth in the US economy.
WORK ABLE SOLUTIONS
“This policy agenda clearly defines the demolition industry’s position and will assist policy makers in crafting workable solutions to the nation’s most pressing economic issues.”
In an open letter to the country’s policy makers, he added: “The NDA believes businesses have the right to determine, within the boundaries of the law, what is best for their employees and organisation.

“Onerous federal policies hinder our members’ ability to create jobs and stimulate growth for the economy. As you work to explore all areas of sensible legislation and regulation, we reiterate our calls for balance.
“Burdensome taxes, excessive regulations on business activitand labour shortages are just a few examples of issues that significantly impact the demolition industry.”
SPECIFIC CHALLENGES
The 18-page document covers 10 policy areas in total, including workplace safety and health, where the association said: “We continue to urge OSHA (the Occupational Safety and Health Administration) to consider the specific challenges faced by the demolition industr y and to work collaboratively in an effort to ensure that demolition contractors are not unfairly burdened.”
Against this positive background, the NDA will host its latest Convention and Expo in the Arizona city of Phoenix, from 22 to 25 February.
Under the theme of “Where the Future Begins”, Demolition Phoenix, as the event is known, will follow the trend of previous events by combining an indoor exhibition with educational and social events, not forgetting the outdoor Live Demo event allowing the audience of demolition professionals to test actual machines and attachments. And as in previous years it will conclude with the association’s official banquet including the announcements of its award winners and scholarship recipients.
FULLY BOOKED
Meanwhile in Germany, Recycling Aktiv – known as RATL after its co-location with the Tiefbau Live show – will take place from 27 to 29 April at the Karlsruhe Trade Fair Centre. Because of Covid postponements, it is the second edition of the show in 12 months, but this has done nothing to dampen the enthusiasm of event organiser Messe Karlsruhe.
“Twelve weeks before the start of the trade fair, the 90,000 sq m (968,000 sq ft) of outdoor exhibition space is fully booked. The three compact days of the event will be full of tailored solutions for businesses from the construction, demolition and recycling industries”, said RATL project manager Olivia Hogenmüller.
This will be the fourth time that the Karlsruhe Trade Fair Centre will host the demonstration trade fair. Home to Germany’s fifth-largest outdoor exhibition area, it offers the perfect conditions for the exciting live demonstrations that are the hallmark of the unique trade fair duo. Around 230 exhibitors are expected, including the likes of Zeppelin, Kinshofer, Sany, Kiesel and Doppstadt.

These will present their construction machinery, equipment and recycling systems in realistic processes, either at their stands or on one of the five demonstration building sites and special theme areas. The live demonstration shows are organised by topic, allowing visitors to compare various products directly and learn how to boost efficiency in their own businesses.
The organiser added that visitors can look for ward to a total of 15 topic-based shows featuring machiner y and systems from the world of recycling. These will process a variety of materials from wood and biomass to scrap and metal. ■
