The industry needs more workers

The data also revealed that firms would have added significantly more workers if they could find more people to hire.

“The number of job openings continues to outpace hiring, suggesting employers wanted to bring on many more workers than they are able to find,” commented Ken Simonson, chief economist at the AGC.

One of the things that the industry is doing is turning to technology for help. The analysis of earnings calls revealed that a number of construction companies mentioned using technology to help address shortages, such as unmanned robots, increased machine automation and digitisation.

Focusing on issues that are important to younger people is vital. “We believe that bridging the skills gap is all about attracting future engineers and engaging with them,” says Raj Somal, from engineering consultancy Dice.

“A report found that 62% of Gen Z are aware and engaged with the climate emergency, but only 30% see construction as a sector they can work in to address it. Focusing on sustainability to create green-skilled jobs must be a priority.”
