In the US State of Texas, citizens are encouraged to “Remember the Alamo”, a one-time battle cry and now reverent phrase that honours the Battle of the Alamo fought between the Republic of Texas and Mexico in 1836.

The site is home to the Alamo Church building, a Spanish mission and fortress built in 1718, in which Texas Revolutionaries took siege against attacking Mexican forces. It’s a popular tourist destination and the site is undergoing a massive US$500 million preservation restoration, and construction project (called ‘The Alamo Plan’) that will reimagine the certified National Historic Landmark site.

“The completion of the Alamo Plan will not only safeguard the physical structures of the historic Alamo Church and Long Barrack but also honour the sacrifices made by the individuals who lived, fought, and died at the Alamo,” states the Alamo Plan.

The scheme seeks to install new exhibit spaces, including a 160,000 sq ft Alamo Visitor Center and Museum, which will house more than 5,000 artifacts. It will also offer event spaces, is designed with a rooftop terrace, and has plans for various retail space. Restoration and preservation work is planned for the iconic 300-year-old mission building, which requires stabilisation, mortar restoration, and roof repair. Additional work to an adjacent historic barracks building will include wall assessments and drainage-system installation.

“The Alamo Church and the Long Barrack are the sole remaining structures from the Battle of the Alamo in 1836. We have brought in a world class team to preserve and conserve these two remaining buildings before they are lost completely,” says Alamo Plan.

The project is scheduled to complete in 2027. iC
