RESEARCH FINDS AI COULD DELIVER ‘NEW ERA’ OF GLOBAL INNOVATION

The sixth annual International Innovation Barometer has revealed that the rise of AI has led to significant changes in how innovation is carried out globally.

According to the report by innovation consultancy Ayming, 84% of businesses believe that AI is positively impacting innovation in terms of both output and process.

The report says that 41% of businesses have already restructured their R&D teams to accommodate wider use of AI in the innovation process, with the number rising to 52% among large companies.

The focus on AI has led to a shift in priorities, with 29% of respondents ranking the implementation of AI as their second highest innovation priority, just after the broader adoption of technology, which 32% of businesses see as their primary concern. A total of 47% of businesses are allocating between 6-20% of their innovation budget to R&D in AI, while nearly a quarter (22%) are devoting more than 20%.

Njy Rios, Director of R&D Incentives at Ayming UK, said, “The development of AI has been driven – and dominated – by mega-cap tech giants like Microsoft and Google but the launch of accessible models like ChatGPT have partly served to democractise access to AI.

“The barrier to entry has been lowered and now businesses of all sizes can integrate AI into their operations without developing their own systems from scratch – which they likely neither have the financial nor human resources to contemplate.”

NEW LASER SCANNING WORKFLOW FOR ROBOTIC DOG

Leica Geosystems, part of Hexagon, has announced a strengthening of its partnership with robotics firm Boston Dynamics making the Leica BLK ARC the first certified reality capture device for Boston Dynamics’ Spot.

The announcement includes software integrations to deliver a new laser scanning workflow for the mobile robot dog.

Leica Geosystems and Boston Dynamics have been partners for four years and, with the new laser scanning workflow, users can now initiate an Autowalk that includes laser scanning in the Spot app and execute it without human intervention.

By integrating this workflow into Boston Dynamics’ Orbit robot fleet management software and Spot app, Spot customers can stack and control BLK ARC reality capture missions as part of a full suite of autonomous robotic capabilities alongside other payloads.

This enables customers to document and capture site conditions in plants, warehouses and enclosed structures, as well as provide infrastructure for asset management, BIM modelling, fire investigation and more.

HIGHLIGHTS

SMART HARD HAT

A new smart safety helmet that its manufacturers claim is a ‘world first’ can detect falls and impacts and automatically call for help if needed. Swedish safety equipment company Båstadgruppen’s Guardio brand has launched the new Armet Pro industrial helmet.

The helmet features tech that reduces the risk of brain injury in the event of impact, as well as a sensor that measures motion and forces in three dimensions 1,000 times per second. In the event of a fall, an object falling from height or any other type of impact, it analyses what has happened and if help is needed.

BENTLEY AND GOOGLE

The expansive Google Maps platform will be integrated into Bentley Systems infrastructure software to create real-world contextual renders for projects.

Through the partnership, Bentley software users and developers can use Google Maps geospatial content, including Google’s Photorealistic 3D Tiles, to aid spatial context and immersive 3D experiences.

NEW 3D PRINTER

Cobod International has launched the BOD3 3D Construction Printer for real concrete applications.

The company said that the standout feature of the BOD3 printer is its advanced extendable ground-based track system. The system allows for limitless extension along the Y-axis (length), enabling coverage for two or three buildings and reducing setup time.
