In 2023, according to a report by the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey, DFW was the third busiest airport in the world by passenger traffic, shuttling nearly 82 million people over that span.
An old saying goes: everything is bigger in Texas. The Dallas Fort Worth International Airport (DFW) transformation project is living up to that motto, as the world’s third-busiest airport by passenger traffic is currently undergoing a US$9-billion renovation.
The capital plan – called DFW Forward – consists of upgrading terminals (including a $3-billion price tag to rebuild Terminal C), airfields, and transport systems across more than 180 projects. In addition to expanding interior space for new facilities, shops, and restaurants, the Terminal C rebuild will also improve security checkpoints and restrooms. An initial phase of construction and expansion of Terminal C will predicate second and third phases of demolition and rebuilding, said DFW.
“Also included in the project, and taking place concurrently with the first phase of Terminal C’s reconstruction, are double-loaded pier expansions of both Terminal C and Terminal A,” added DFW.
The air travel authority noted the work will add 115,000 sq ft (10,684m2 ) and four gates to Terminal C and 140,000 sq ft (13,006m2 ) and five gates to Terminal A. A new parking structure will also be rebuilt with modern parking technologies and infrastructure. The existing structure is scheduled to close for a planned demolition later this year.
The consortium design-and-build team constructing the two terminals consists of Texas-based firms Alpha & Omega (roofing and construction), commercial builders Austin Commercial and construction firm Azteca Enterprises. UK-based HOK and American firm Muller & Muller are listed as designers. Additional major works in DFW Forward include a 15-gate expansion to Terminal F, construction of an electric central utility plant to supply energy from “100% renewable resources”, an east-west throughfare roadway, and a fire station modernisation project, among others. iC
