The final piece of the railway that will connect Abu Dhabi and Dubai with a direct link has been installed. The UAE National Rail Network is a major development within what is the largest infrastructure project in the UAE.

The completion of the main railway between Abu Dhabi and Dubai falls within the framework of ‘The UAE Railway Programme’ and has an investment worth of AED 50 billion (US$13.6 billion). The UAE Railway Programme will link seven emirates and is expected to create economic opportunities amounting to AED 200 billion (US$54.4 billion).

H.H. Sheikh Maktoum bin Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, said, “The UAE Railway Programme reflects the UAE’s ambitions and aspirations to start the next fifty years with huge development projects that enhance its position as a leading regional and global centre in the sectors of trade, economy and logistics services.”

The 256km railway line will play a role in facilitating goods transportation within the UAE and reducing transportation costs for passengers.

The project includes 29 bridges, 60 crossings and 137 drainage channels. The total excavation and backfill work amounted to 46 million cubic metres, with 13,300 workers recording more than 47 million working hours. 

Etihad Rail, the UAE’s national railway network, is said to be working at an accelerated pace to complete Stage two of the UAE National Rail Network, with the project currently reported to be around 70% completed. iC
